This is an outstanding specimen of an extremely unusual fossil fish. It is a Peipiaosteus sp. from the ''feathered dinosaur'' site of China. When it was first discovered, this type was thought to be a fossil shark, but further research found it to be a fossil sturgeon. This excellent fish is well preserved in dorsal view, and the detail of the fish is just exquisite. The eyes of the fish are easily seen, the gill covers are very distinct, and the fins are clearly defined. Even the skin of the fish is intact, and some of the internal organs are evident. The fossil has wonderful color and contrast and is beautifully centered on the large (9.5'' X 11.5''), unbroken plate of matrix. And best of all, there is NO REPAIR, RESTORATION OR ENHANCEMENT of this magnificent fossil. This is a very displayable example of this uncommon fossil fish from China.
