Here is a very nice fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and wonderfully articulated. The fish exhibits fine detail - the bone structure of the fish is clearly defined. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins are beautifully displayed. The natural, orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts well with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is almost perfectly centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is an attractive specimen of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
