Here is a very pretty specimen of a fossil herring, Diplomystus dentatus, from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This specimen is very nicely articulated and exhibits fine detail. The bone structure is superb and the fin detail is excellent. The large eye socket is well displayed. The natural orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the buff-colored matrix. The fossil is well positioned on the almost rectangular plate of shale. This is a beautiful specimen of an ancient fossil fish from the Eocene.
