Here is a very attractive fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and preserves fine detail. The bone structure of the fish is clearly defined. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins are wonderfully displayed. The orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the oval plate of shale. This is a very good example of Diplomystus dentatus from the Green River Formation.
