This is an extremely attractive fossil fish. It is a very detailed specimen of Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring exhibits the bone structure in beautiful fashion. The eye socket is easily seen and the fins are wonderfully displayed. The natural, dark, orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the large rectangular plate of shale. This is a great example of Diplomystus dentatus from the Green River Shale.
