Here is a very exotic fossil fish. This is a rare specimen of Ctenothrissa vexillifer from the Cretaceous of Lebanon. Due to political unrest, fossils from this site are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. This type of fish has a bizarre "sail-backed" dorsal fin and large, rounded fins on the underside. This strange-looking fish exhibits excellent detail - the bone structure is well defined, and the huge fins are easily seen. The fossil has great color and contrast and is well centered on the somewhat rectangular plate of sublithographic limestone. This is an excellent example of this bizarre fish from the Cretaceous seas.
