Here is a very attractive example of a fossil herring from the Green River Shale. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. The specimen is very nicely articulated and exhibits fine detail. The bone structure is clearly defined and the fin detail is excellent. The eye socket is quite evident and the upturned mouth is easily seen. The natural orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is almost perfectly centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a great specimen of Diplomystus from the Fossil Lake deposits.
