Here is a very aesthetic fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fish exhibits wonderful preservation. The bone structure is nicely defined and the fins are beautifully displayed. The eye socket is easily seen and the upturned mouth is readily apparent. The dark brown fossil contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. It is well centered on a very large, somewhat rectangular plate of shale that also contains the impressions of two other fossil fish. This is a very eye-appealing specimen of Diplomystus from the Green River Shale.
