Here is a very nice fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia humilis from the Green River Shale. This fossil fish is complete and exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed and the fins are well preserved. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen. The fossil has great, natural color and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. It is almost perfectly centerd on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very good example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
