Here is a very pretty specimen of one of the most sought-after fish from the Green River Shale. This is Priscacara liops from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fish was found in the "18 inch layers" and painstakingly prepared with an air abrasive machine to reveal the wonderful detail of this "sunfish". The bone structure of this fish is superb and the eye socket is easily seen. The fins are beautifully displayed - the sharp spines of the dorsal fin are intact and projecting upward at a jaunty angle. The fish has excellent, natural color and contrasts very nicely with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the somewhat rounded plate of shale. This is a very fine example of Priscacara liops from the Eocene.
