Here is an interesting specimen of Phareodus testis from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil fish exhibits very fine detail. The eye socket is easily seen and the bone structure of the fish is well displayed. The fins are wonderfully preserved. Perhaps the most outstanding feature is the open mouth with many sharp teeth exposed. The fossil is almost perfectly centered on the rectangular plate of shale. The brown fish contrasts wonderfully with the cream-colored matrix. This is a nice example of this predatory fish from the Green River Shale.
