This is a very exotic fossil fish. It is a Ctenothrissa vexillifer from the sublithographic limestone of Lebanon. Fossils from this area are very hard to obtain because of years of political unrest. This specimen has a bizarre "sail-backed" dorsal fin and large, extended fins on the underside. The fish has incredibly fine detail, even displaying the individual bones and eye socket. It has great color and contrasts beautifully with the plate of limestone matrix. It is hard to imagine a much more displayable fossil fish. It is a top quality example of this strange fossil fish from the Cretaceous coral reefs.
