This is a very rare example of a head shield from a Devonian ostracoderm, Cephalaspis sp., from an unusual location. This specimen is from the Ukraine. Ostracoderms are the earliest and most primitive of fishes with no known ancestors. The head shield of the fish is well preserved on a slab of reddish-colored matrix. The fossil exhibits good detail. The eyes are quite noticeable. There are also several other partial specimens on the slab. The specimen has been repaired but no restoration is present. This is a very unusual fossil ostracoderm from an obscure location.
