Here is a specimen of Leptolepides sprattiformis from the famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. This lithographic limestone is well known for the fantastic preservation of the rare fossils that are occasionally encountered. This specimen is a complete fish. The fossil fish shows good detail. The head, body, tail, and fins are all present. An unusual feature of this specimen is that both halves (part and counterpart) of the specimen are represented. The fish has good color and contrasts well with the matrix. The fossil is well centered on a somewhat rectangular slab. This is an interesting "split" fish from the Jurassic.
