This is probably the nicest fossil fish we have ever had. It is an "Exotic Sunfish" from the Jurassic Solnhofen fauna. These fish are known for their rows of ball-like grinding teeth (present) that were used for nipping at the coral reefs in which it lived. Also preserved is the eye-brow bone for which this fish is known. These fish are rare at Solnhofen, because most of the lagoon was too shallow for the fish to live. This plate also has the famous Solnhofen dendrites complementing the fish. This plate came from a major fossil collection, and will probably end up in another. It is probably the best fish fossil we have ever had.
