Here is a very nice fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation. This classic fossil fish exhibits very fine detail - the bone structure is nicely displayed, and the overall shape is quite distinct. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the scale pattern is somewhat preserved. The large fossil (over four and a half inches long!) has great dark color and contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The fish is nicely showcased on the semi-squared plate of shale. This is a cool example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
