Here is a fine fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation. This classic fossil fish exhibits very fine detail - the bone structure and fins are well displayed, and the overall shape is quite nice. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the scale pattern is somewhat preserved. The distinct fossil has great dark color and contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The fish is well showcased on the large, squared plate of shale. This is an excellent example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
