Here is a large example of a classic fossil fish. This is distinct Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This large fossil herring is beautifully fossilized and preserves good detail. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins and tail are nicely displayed. The striking, orange-brown color of the fish contrasts well with the cream-colored matrix. The large fossil is well showcased on the rectangular plate of shale. This is an impressive example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
