Here is a large fossil herring. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2008. The fish exhibits wonderful detail - the bone structure is well preserved, and the fins are easily seen. The tail of the fish is clearly defined, and even some of the the scale pattern is noticeable. The fish has great, orangish-brown color that contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fish is well showcased on the natural plate of shale. This is a fine example of a large fossil herring from the Eocene.
A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
