Here is a very distinct fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2008. The fish exhibits wonderful detail - the bone structure is well preserved, and the fins are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and even the scale pattern is present. The fish has great, orangish-brown color that contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fish is well showcased on the large, semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a very fine example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
